In his endless search for the “pleasure of the surface” Qatari artist Yousef Ahmed presents to us his new row material that he generated from the “fronds of the palms”, putting us in a confrontation with a horizon which deserves discovery.
These are associations required by Ahmed’s painting through a motivation by the nature of these row materials which he fertilized on the surface of his new land to guarantee the continuity of the depth of his genuine experience. This resulted in revelations which inspired Ahmed to sum up himself within a crowd of symbols and meanings, a fertile calligraphic work.
Yousef Ahmed, unlike any other artist, due to his sensitivity towards the canvas he uses, makes them rich surfaces with some terrains. The discoverer of these terrains loses his way in the warmth and gradation of the colours and what they represent in the human soul. The letter is shown as a sophist walks in a hurry to emancipate from the burden of the meaning transforming itself into allusions that could be understood without reading.
Ahmed in this experience reminds us of the importance of our daily life constituents and the deepness of its undulations but at the same time, he takes us to an oasis shaded by palms trees through which we might taste the ecstasy of meditation. His art work is characterized by the use of Arabic letters benefiting from the unique form and flexibility of these letters to express cultural and national emotions.
One of the most prolific artists from the Gulf region, Yousef Ahmad has stunned connoisseurs with his abstract pieces of art. Yousef Ahmad was born in Doha, Qatar in 1955. A member of the first generation of modern artists in Qatar, Yousef Ahmad by necessity studied fine arts abroad, first in Egypt then receiving a Masters degree from Mills College in California in 1982. Inspired by the forms and the hues of the flat desert landscape of his native Qatar and by
Arabic calligraphy, his paintings are often collages of mixed media works where colours and textures derived from natural elements. Lines are elongated across the canvas or wood, and letters and patterns are layered with architectural shapes.
Yousef Ahmad has pioneered the development of modern Arabic art forms and is one of the few contemporary Arab artists to gain international recognition and appreciation. In 2010 Yousef Ahmad received the Arab Creativity Award by the Paris-based Lebanese Cultural Forum. His work is regularly chosen by Bonham's, Sotheby's and Christies Committees for their auctions due to his outstanding ability and rich experience, being recognized as one of the best abstract artists in his field. His many participations in auctions since 2007 have seen much success amongst keen collectors and institutions. Yousef Ahmad has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and the Arab world, and is the Art Consultant to the new Arab Art Museum in Doha. His work can be found in collections worldwide and in museums such as the British Museum and the Metropolitan New York.
