Toshiya Kobayashi - Just by looking at the leaves of plants all in green.
I am moved by the beautiful, refreshing scenery.
Plants are around me throughout the year. And they bloom flowers of various colors and give delight to my eyes and to my heart. I give thoughts to plant’s way of life.
The decisive difference between people and plants is that plants only live on sunlight and water. Plants photosynthesize to sustain their lives, and eat nothing else. They seem to be saying that “There is this way of life.”
Plants that live in that way are not able to move on their own.
Thus, their lives are placed in the hands of the wind and other beings.
- Not knowing where their lives will be taken.
In time, the flowers of various colors wither, and then, fall to the ground.
The leaves all in green also wither in time and are blown away by the wind, one leaf falling after another. Even so, some leaves resist and hold onto the tree.
But what is in the “mind” of each leaf and each flower petal during the short while
they fall to the ground one by one ?
Are they dreaming about their individual distant past ?
Could their dreams be about a primitive shape “they want to become?”
Or could they be dreaming about become some life different from the state of their lives now?
I cannot help but feel sorrow for plants.
This series of works was depicted by giving thoughts to plants.
My exploration into plants is to see “the something” that has not been visualized or manifested.
If plants are dreaming about what “they want to become,” I wish to touch their dreams, even if I can only slightly touch them.
